Lucan Skating Club Policies
Lucan Skating Club advocates and practices the principles of Skate Canada's Safe Sport Framework.
Preventing injuries is important to keeping people active throughout their lives. Lucan Skating Club is committed to maintaining the health and safety of its athletes, coaches and officials and believes that their health is of vital importance.
Skate Canada Helmet Policy
Wearing a helmet is MANDATORY on the CanSkate session (Stage 5 and lower, and those who lack good balance and control) for your skater's safety and protection. Only a CSA certified hockey helmet with all helmet straps attached shall be worn while on the ice.
It is important to ensure that when a skater is on the ice, they are protected with equipment designed for their sport or activity. Hockey helmets are designed to help protect against head injuries occurring on ice, whether from a fall or collision. Bicycle helmets are not made to protect the back of your skater's head if they slip and fall backwards and are not allowed.
Hockey helmets must have a sticker/labeling with the date of manufacture and have a chin strap. It is important that the helmet fit properly in order to ensure proper protection. Face masks are not mandatory; however, young skaters may benefit from the added protection.
Any skater beyond a CanSkate Stage 5 level may choose to continue to wear a CSA certified hockey helmet for added protection.
Skate Canada implemented this policy as a proactive safety measure to help protect members, which all clubs and members must abide by. This policy is not optional for clubs, therefore should a skater, who according to the policy must wear a CSA certified hockey helmet, arrive at the rink without the proper helmet, the skater will be refused entry onto the ice surface for their safety and protection.

How should the hockey helmet fit?
- A hockey helmet should fit snug to prevent any shifting and maximize protection. Make sure the chinstrap can be adjusted so it gently makes contact under the chin when fastened.
- For an adjustable helmet, open it to the largest setting and gradually begin to downsize the helmet until a comfortably snug fit is achieved. The helmet should rest on the head so that the rim is one finger width above the eyebrow and makes contact with the top of your head.
- Although most helmets are lined with protective foam, some helmets will feel better than others. Try on different brands of helmets for fit and comfort.
- All CSA certified helmets have a sticker indicating their certification.
The CSA certified logo can be found on the back of the hockey helmet affixed to the outer shell of the helmet indicating year of production. The expiry date is 5 years after the production date on the CSA label (see below, left image) OR indicated on another seal (see below, right image).
Rowan's Law - Concussion Safety Policy
On July 1, 2019, new rules came into effect through Rowan’s Law, to improve concussion safety in amateur competitive sport.
In accordance with the Government of Ontario's implementation of Rowan's Law (Concussion Safety), each and every family is required to sign the Rowan’s Law Acknowledgement Form every year prior to their skater entering the ice surface with NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule.
It is a requirement that these forms are retained on file by the club, and Skate Ontario and/or the government of Ontario may audit the forms to ensure compliance.
Please submit your signed form in one of two ways:
1. scan your signed form and email it to the club at lucanskatingclub@gmail.com OR
2. submit your signed form to the coaches on your first day of skating

Athletes under 26 and parents/guardians of athletes under 18 years of age must confirm that they have reviewed the Government of Ontario Concussion Awareness Resources and Skate Ontario’s Concussion Code of Conduct for Athletes and Parents/Guardians below prior to registration and/or on the first day of skating.

Lucan Skating Club Code of Conduct
Lucan Skating Club aims to promote a safe, supportive environment for the skating community that equally respects our common interests and our differences for all skaters to enjoy the sport and fulfill their individual goals within a team spirit.
All members must conduct themselves in a manner respectful of all policies and property at the ice rink as well as any other facility. This Code of Conduct is also in effect when the Club is represented at out of town activities. Please exhibit a model of behaviour that will provide a good example to the community and encourage pride in our club.
- Members are expected to display proper respect and sportsmanship towards their fellow skaters, coaches, parents, Board of Directors and the general public at all times
- Members are expected to follow the direction of Ice Rink staff and Lucan Skating Club members acting as rink attendants during Club sessions or Club events
- Members shall not harass or abuse, physically or verbally, any other fellow skaters, coaches, officials or parent at any time
- At team events, simulations and competitions skaters are encouraged to make an effort to support their fellow skaters during their performances
- Members are expected to follow any coach’s instructions where that coach may request restrictions on routines or elements that she/he deems unsafe or dangerous to other skaters on any club ice session
- All guest skaters will pay guest skating fees before going on the ice
- All members will pay their registration fees before taking part in any skating sessions, unless otherwise approved by the Club President or Treasurer
- on-ice safety rules:
- get up quickly after falling down
- look in the direction of travel when skating backwards
- no pushing, playing tag or other horse play
- no gum, candy on the ice
- keep rink doors closed during sessions
- stops should be done a safe distance from the boards
- Skaters having a lesson have the first right of way
- Skaters practicing the scheduled session have the second right of way unless other skaters have passed all tests in that discipline
- Skaters having their solo/music played should be given third right of way
- Placement of spins and jumps must be according to ice guidelines
- Skaters should not congregate or socialize on the ice. Rest breaks should be taken off the ice surface
- A coach has the right to ask a skater to leave the ice due to poor conduct

Lucan Skating Club is committed to following Skate Canada's Code of Ethics.
This code of ethics applies to all skaters, coaches, board members, and volunteers of Skate Canada and its affiliate organizations.
This code of ethics also applies to parents and guardians who participate in and observe related activities.
